Happy 2012

Happy New Year, my fellow book gabbers. I hope you are reading and enjoying NC author's "My Cousin the Saint" by Justin Cantanoso. We will meet to discuss on January 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the Wine Cellar in downtown Southern Pines. I hope you weren't too inspired by the author's journey and didn't jet off to Italy. Maybe we'll all have to enjoy a glass of Italian wine in honor of our read.

Hi there everyone! The story of Greg Mortenson's accidental events leading him to build girls schools in rural Pakistan and the effects this had, and can have, has been so thought provoking. He has shed light in a dark area that I now listen to the news of this part of the world with so many more questions in my mind. All your book choices have been inspiring - thanks so much Gabby. I love our group and our meetings at the wine cellar! I look forward to the next one and especially reading your own book...

September meeting

Our group--Terry , Theresa, Debra , Linda, Crystal and I met Thursday, September 24 at the Wine Cellar and were fortunate to land in the middle of the case sale with tons of free samples. Very nice to taste all kinds of wines while having a fun discussion about our reads. We may even take a "class trip" with the book club on the train to New York City. Linda would like to see the city since it's been years since she lived there and Gabby loves the city and is happy to show the book club around and have some fun! The club finally decided on Kay's (Wine Cellar employee) recommendation of reading Barbara Kingsolver's "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" because when Gabby saw most of the club members at the Sunrise Theater's showing of "Food Inc." she thought it'd be a good tie in with the film since the book is about Kingsolver's family's decision to spend a year ONLY eating food they had grown on their own with only one store purchase allowed to fill their stomachs. "Food Inc." will be shown again at the Sunrise on Oct. 20 and 21 with the movie "Fresh" showing Oct. 22 and 23. Our next meeting will be Oct. 15 at 6:30 at the Wine Cellar and your thouughts on the new reading material will be appreciated. I've invited Jan Liteshoe, a local friend who's wanted to join our book group and is also an organic gardner who can add much to the discussion. Happy reading and see you on the 15th.

Been Awhile

Wow, ladies. It sure has been awhile since I updated this page :). Now, we've just finished Three Cups Of Tea and are meeting Thursday evening at the Wine Cellar to discuss and pick our new memoir to read. I hope to see Terry, Katrina, Deb, Linda, Kristin and Melanie there. Let's sit down, sip a glass of wine and talk about our latest read and then pick our next read. All suggestions and comments welcomed and encouraged.

Moving On....Book #2

Terry Marquez, Deb Fry, Linda McKarney and I (Gabrielle Studenmund) met and sat on the deck of the Wine Cellar 8/14. We first talked of our love for Bruce Goldstein's memoir, "Puppy Chow Is Better Than Prozac" and hence decided that memoirs are going to be our focus in reading selections. We chose our next book "The Glass Castle" as it sounds like a great memoir. In other news, "Pupy Chow Is Better Than Prozac" must have inspired Linda to adopt a puppy. ASSIGNMENT: Read The Glass Castles to page 122 (about half the book).

Meeting #2

Last night (6-5-08) the book club met with Terry, Gabby, LeslieAnn and Beth in attendance. We enjoyed our cool glass of wine inside since it was still 100-degrees outside. Here were the tenants of our discussion of part one: 1) We all agreed that we're really enjoying the book; 2) We felt very sold on his manic life and commiserated with his illness; 3) We enjoyed seeing the author's connection with Ozzy, the adopted puppy and identified with his connection to the pooch; 4) Seeing his connection with Ozzy is very uplifting; and 5) we all can't wait to read the last two sections.
In business, we decided we are not going to meet in July since our meeting would coincide with fourth of July celebrations so our next Wine Cellar meeting will August 7th at 6:30 p.m. and we will come armed with our suggestions for book #2 which might be a memoir considering all in attendance spoke to our mutual love of the genre.
